Stuff I Love // January

It’s been FAR too long since I did a “stuff I love” post, and as part of my 2013 resolution to get back to blogging more of the kinds of things I enjoy writing about (and that YOU enjoy seeing), I decided to reinstate some regular monthly posts and talk about more of the personal and business-related things happening in my world. We all love seeing pretty weddings, no doubt, but I know many of you readers come back for the meatier posts, so I’m hoping to be able to give you more of that in the months to come.

Anyway, to get that kickstarted, here are some things I’m obsessed with these days!

1. Kate Spade turquoise studs

My brother-in-law’s girlfriend Maghen gave me these earrings for Christmas, and I think I’ve worn them almost every single day since. ;) She clearly knows me well, as they combine my love for so many things: Kate Spade (obviously), turquoise and gold, and things that are simple and modern. I’m normally not a big jewelry person, and usually my wedding rings are the only pieces I’m wearing, but something about these particular studs makes me SO ridiculously happy, and they go with pretty much every item of clothing I own. Or at least that’s what I tell myself when I put them on every morning.

2. The One-Line-a-Day Journal

If only you knew how many pretty little journals I’ve bought over the years with every intention of diligently filling them out every night before bed. IF ONLY. Typically this cycle only lasts for a few days, and then I’ll forget or get too lazy to keep up with it, and then next thing I know I’ve given up altogether and I’ve got a stack of lovely journals with approximately 3 pages of writing in each one to remind me of my failure. When I saw this cute little book, I felt like it may be the solution to my journal-commitment issues. Why? Because you only have to write ONE SENTENCE A DAY. How doable and non-threatening is that?! It’s like Twitter but it’s something physical, and private, and hopefully a really neat keepsake to have once I’ve filled it up over the next 5 years. And without the annoying spam. I’ve filled out the first seven days without an issue, so now I just have to keep my momentum going. ;) Thank you Kelly for gifting me this!

3. The Chaperone

This is one of my favorite novels I’ve read recently. I first heard about it from my trusty book-recommending-guru friend Gail, and figured if she loved it, then I would too. (We have ridiculously similar tastes and share a love for contemporary fiction, so I know to go to her for suggestions when I’m at a loss for what to read next.) I devoured this fictional story about Cora Carlisle, who is tasked with chaperoning the well-known silent film star Louise Brooks for a summer in New York City when Louise is still 15 and hasn’t yet skyrocketed to international fame. It was so interesting to see how the two very different women influence and learn from each other, and to watch how Cora’s circumstances and living arrangements change so drastically through the years after her trip. Highly recommend it!

4. Apples

I know… kind of lame, right? And before you go thinking I’m some kind of health nut, let me assure you that 95% of my diet is composed of meat, carbs, and dairy products. I’m not exactly what you’d call a well-rounded eater. Give me a steak or a bowl of mac ‘n cheese and I am happy as a clam (which, coincidentally, I also find disgusting). But lately I’ve grown to love living by the ole “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” philosophy. My favorites are the Gala and Honeycrisp varieties, and I keep them in the fridge so they’re nice and cold and crispy. When paired with a spoonful of peanut butter… well, I’ve got myself a top-notch snack. And probably better for me than the bowl of Lucky Charms I would’ve otherwise eaten.

5. Les Miserables

I’m not sure if I should publicly admit this, but before seeing the movie adaptation of this classic with Jamie and my parents over Christmas, I had never seen the musical or read the book, and frankly knew very little about the story. And even for the first 2/3 or so of the film, I was fighting the urge to be converted to a fan. But then as the battle scene began, the tears began to fall, and by the end, I was literally heaving. My parents and I walked out of the theater straight up ugly crying like nobody’s business. (The only time I’ve seen Jamie cry during a movie was at Marley and Me, so he doesn’t count. ;) ) What an absolutely beautiful story of grace and hope, and one of the best pictures of the gospel I’ve ever seen. Truly. If you haven’t seen it yet… GO. And if you don’t cry, well, maybe you should go sit through the vet scene of Marley and Me with Jamie and see what happens. :)

I hope you guys have a lovely, productive, soul-satisfying, resolution-keeping kind of week! As always, thanks for stopping by!

Angela - I <3 U.

carly - Love this! And have to mention that I purchased that SAME journal for myself back in late October, just before I deactivated my Facebook account. I’ve recorded over two months of memories so far and it’s amazing! It really helps you cherish every single day you have-highly recommended! Also, #5… Nothing else needs to be said there. It’s just perfect. ;)

Addie - Oh, I think we would be such good friends… I still need to make time to get to birmingham so we can have a chat… :)

Kaitie Bryant - So 1. I LOVE the blue journal book and I have been keeping extra copies to give to friends as gifts because it’s so good!! 2. I LOVE these posts:) it’s so fun to see what people like and 3. I can’t wait to see Les Mis and see my ugly cry in full force:) thanks for being such an inspiration to me!

Gail - Yeah for reading The Chaperone!! I loved that book so much too! And now you have me hooked on wanting some Kate Spade jewelry!

Also, we are apple twins. There’s a whole bowl of Honeycrisp sitting on the counter right now :)

On Spontaneous Side-of-the-Road Sessions

“Oh my gosh, you guys, look at the sunset! Look at the light! This is amazing! I’m going to grab my camera… quick, let’s get in the car and go find a field!”

This is the kind of thing you might expect to hear your sister say on a random May evening if she’s a photographer and you and your girlfriend are her pet Urban Outfitters models. :)

I stumbled across these photos a couple of days ago and had forgotten that I had even taken them on one of my visits back to Knoxville to shoot a wedding last spring. My brother Seth and his girlfriend Joy are the absolute cutest, and I love exploiting that for impromptu photo shoots every now and then. ;) For these, we literally jumped in the car to drive to a high hill near my parents house as the sun was dipping low into the sky, so all this was done in about 7 minutes before it was completely dark. And for two people not planning on being photographed and having zero time to get ready, they look pretty flipping adorable, right?! I’m telling you…. UO models!

I love you guys! And to everyone else…. Happy Friday! :)

A Merry Christmas and 2012 Client Gifts

I hope you all are enjoying a very happy holiday season with your loved ones! Right now I’m typing this in my parents’ living room here in Knoxville, TN, surrounded by some of my favorite people, a beautifully lit tree, lots of presents we’ll be exchanging later tonight, and a pork roast cooking in the kitchen that smells absolutely divine. Despite still being in recovery from being sick all last week (and now having passed my germs onto Jamie and my dad- sorry everyone), I feel so thankful and happy to be here in this moment. I hope wherever you are as you’re reading this, you’re feeling the same (minus the coughing and hoarse voice, of course).

I wanted to share a little peek at something I’ve been working on for awhile now. Because 2012 been such a crazy, wonderful, exciting year, I wanted to do a little something special for my wedding clients. (Most of you should have received yours by now, but if you haven’t, pretend like you aren’t seeing this right now. ;) ) I’m so thankful to them for allowing me to be apart of their wonderful weddings, and I wanted to give them something to commemorate their first Christmas together as married couples. But I also wanted something super custom and keepsake-worthy. One of my very favorite wedding gifts Jamie and I received was from a family friend who cross-stitched and framed an image of the aqua car we had at our wedding (and took a billion photos in front of). So with that in mind, I asked my incredibly talented friend Mandii of Laughter & Snow to illustrate custom portraits of each of my brides and grooms. I’ve been in love with her whimsical, colorful, Tim-Burton-eqsue style since she began Instagramming her doodles a few months back, so I hoped she’d be up for the challenge. Luckily, she hopped on board! All I did was ask her to incorporate elements that made each wedding unique, while making all the portraits look uniform with a similar color palette, and when she showed me the first round of drafts, I nearly fell out of my chair. I couldn’t believe how perfectly she had nailed each person’s style and personality with just simple line drawings. Every detail was so thoughtfully incorporated, and the colors were stunning. I almost didn’t want to let these babies go once she delivered them. ;) But luckily I DID take some photos so that we can all enjoy this girl’s crazy talent. Seriously, you guys…. if you have any design or illustration needs, you NEED to email her. She’s a genius (and a joy to work with, to boot!).

Enjoy this sneak peek, and again, Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Michele K. - Awwwww, you mentioned the cross-stitch I made you. I’m so glad it is enjoyed!!

Kim - Morgan, we LOVE our print! Soo incredibly thoughtful and yet ANOTHER reason why you’re the most talented, wonderful, and incredibly caring photographer EVER. This is why you’re the one who will continue to document our family through your eye and lens.

Thank you so much for going above and beyond! <3

Brynn Callahan - We got ours! It was such a great surprise on Christmas Eve!! I loved the tire swing that was included, just like from the photo we used for our thank you cards :)

Lorraine - I love that I can recognize all your clients just from these portraits! How totally sweet.

I have decided that blog stalking a photographer all year is sort of like watching a favorite television series. It has a style, a look, and a feel as beloved (and well dressed) characters move in and out of the plot. And it even has a season premiere and season finale! Basically, I love watching your show, Morgan. :)

Happy new year!

Erin Yeschin - Thank you soooo much for our adorable pic! The incorporation of our beloved puppies, and even Steve’s ‘shorts’ is all so perfect and personal - we LOVE it! You’re amazing and beyond talented and we’re so lucky to have had you & Sam capture the most incredible day of our lives yet. A million thank you’s couldn’t convey our gratitude but know we are forever grateful and feel truly blessed!

Rebekah - Merry Christmas Morgan!
