Emily + Woody // A Bicycle Built for Two

When Emily first told me that she and Woody were bringing a tandem bicycle to their engagement session, I of course was super pumped. I’ve always wanted to shoot with one, but the opportunity had just never presented itself. Even better? Woody restored this bike himself and painted it the best shade of green, which is perfectly fitting for their St. Patrick’s Day wedding next year. How adorable!

Emily and Woody are both mechanical engineers by trade, but when it comes to hobbies, they couldn’t be more different. Emily sticks to tennis, but she told me that Woody has a house filled with “toys” for all his hobbies: beer brewing, building boats, and working on cars, to name a few. As someone with a husband who loves hobbies involving expensive toys, I could completely relate. Here’s hoping they have lots of good storage when they move in together. ;)

We met up on an absolutely stunning day in November, when the leaves were right at their peak. Apparently every other photographer in Birmingham had the same idea because there were sessions happening all around us, but I used my super sneaky skills to scope out some gorgeous (and completely deserted!) spots for us. I have no idea why no one was taking advantage of the stunning yellow gingko tree below, but hey, all the better for us. ;)

Enjoy!

So stinkin’ adorable. I LOVE Emily’s eyes!

Fall color, you’re my favorite.

Thanks so much for a fun session, Emily and Woody! :)

carly - Fall colors do you right, Mo! And I absolutely love that one with the petals falling over them. So cute!

Alison + Thomas // An Elegant Florence, Alabama Wedding

It’s hard to believe, but Alison and Thomas’s wedding was the very last of my 2012 season (and what a season it’s been- expect a long recap post in the near future!). And with November weddings in the South, you never know what you’re going to get. It could be sunny and 65 degrees or dreary and 40 degrees. Luckily, we got one of the gorgeous warm days for the wedding, which made all the fall leaves really shine.

These two got married at the stunning Grace Episcopal Church in Florence, Alabama, which made for a perfect backdrop for photos. I loved the florals and overall color palette of reds, forest greens, and pops of burnt orange, which perfectly signaled the transition from fall to winter. But what I loved most of all was how completely relaxed Alison and Thomas were the whole day. Since they’re both med school students (they even had to go back to school the Monday after the wedding!), they’re used to chaos and busyness, so they decided not to get bogged down with worry and stress about wedding-related details, and it really showed. They were both completely present and full of joy, and it was an honor to get to witness their marriage ceremony.

A huge thank you as always to the lovely Mary Margaret Smith for her assistance, moral support, beautiful photos, and all around friendship. She has played a *major* role in the success of this wedding season, but more on that later too. ;)

On to the photos!

I just absolutely love this portrait of Alison with her mom, sister, grandmother, aunt, and cousin. There’s something so powerful to me about a multi-generational portrait of the women of a family, and the big smiles in this one just fill my heart with happiness.

After the ceremony, we headed to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club for the reception. It was the most GORGEOUS time of day for portraits, and the scenery was obviously amazing. I was in photographer heaven!

The craziest part of the day was when a huge lightning storm rolled through later in the evening. At this point many of the guests had wandered inside to watch the big Alabama-LSU game, so I decided to go out on the porch and see if I couldn’t catch a lightning strike in a photo. Mary Margaret had the same idea (we’re always thinking on the same wavelength like that- it’s scary, really), and was already experimenting. Almost right after I sat down next to her, this insane gust of wind blew in and nearly knocked us over, so we raced inside for cover. At that point it literally began pouring sheets of rain, which we then had to run through to get to the car… we looked like we had gone swimming. :) Anyway, neither of us thought we had actually gotten a good storm shot, but when I loaded the photos on the computer, I spotted THIS one of MM’s below and my jaw dropped! I so wish I could take credit for it but it was ALL her!

I also wanted to include a few shots from Alison’s bridal shoot with this post because I think they work so well with the overall look and feel of the wedding. She brought this gorgeous fur coat to wear at the wedding in case it got cold, but it was actually too warm all day for it, so I’m glad we got this opportunity to shoot her in it anyway. I love, love, love a bride in a vintage fur coat!

Congratulations Alison and Thomas, and thank you so much for allowing me to be apart of your day!

Diane + Jason // An Intimate Schoolhouse Wedding

This wedding was featured on 100 Layer Cake.

I’ll admit it: I have a crush on Diane and Jason’s wedding.

My first thought when she told me they were getting married at Tannehill State Park and sent me photos of the little white chapel in the woods where the ceremony would be, and the precious schoolhouse where they would have their reception, was “Can I please redo my own wedding so we could have it here?!” This venue is beyond adorable, and it was perfect for Diane and Jason’s intimate, personal Sunday afternoon wedding. It ended up also being an absolutely stunning fall day, with the leaves at their peak and brisk sunshine, which only added to the beauty of everything.

As you might remember from their engagement session (also a favorite!), these two love books and film, so the schoolhouse setting was a perfect backdrop for the day. Diane and her amazing florist Laurie of LSL Event Design used the existing vintage decor and color palette as inspiration for the flowers and decorations, and I loved the Americana feel of it all, especially during this time of year in the south.

I hope you guys enjoy these photos as much as we enjoyed taking them! Huge thanks as always to the lovely Mary Margaret Smith for assisting, and for capturing some of the shots you’ll see below.

I’m just in LOVE with this series of portraits!

Little white chapels are my favorite. :)

Fall, I love you.

Diane and Jason, congratulations to you both and thank you SO much for the honor of capturing your gorgeous day! <3

Rachel - Oh, Morgan! I am in love with this wedding! It was so perfect in every way and your capturing of it is beyond brilliant. So many shots made me catch my breathe or say, “Awwww!” And I got a kick out of the man sitting at the desk with his hand raised. What a lovely, loving, unique, and sweet wedding!

fanni - What a gorgeous wedding it is just simply beautiful and the details simply delicious.

Kelly - I love the invites in the oval frame, the chalkboard messages, the leaf send-off, and my absolute fave is the two of them kissing in the doorway of the chapel. Awesome, Morgan!

Sarah - Morgan, you have seriously outdone yourself yet again! What an incredible set of images and the venue was to die for. Colors were perfection and yet again, I’m blown away by your talent!
