Cindy + Phillip // A 30th Anniversary Surprise

A couple of weeks ago, I got a phone call from Jenna. She wanted to know if I’d be interested in photographing something a little different… a surprise anniversary session for her parents Phillip and Cindy, who were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. Goodness knows I LOVE surprises (even though I make it very difficult for anything to be a surprise because I love to interrogate until I figure things out :) ), and the thought of ME being part of the surprise was kind of cool! So I of course said yes, and began scheming with Jenna and her brother Kyle and sister Terra via email leading up to the big day.

The morning of September 4th, I met up with the kids and their significant others at the Birmingham Flight Center, because the first part of the day was Cindy surprising Phillip with flying lessons for his anniversary gift. The catch was that even Cindy had no idea I would be there to document everything, so when they got out of the car, she was just as surprised as he was. After Phillip got on the plane and took off on his discovery flight, Jenna explained to her that they had no idea what to get the woman who had everything she wanted (apparently her husband enjoys spoiling her ;) ), so they thought they would give her the priceless gift of having these memories captured professionally. Needless to say, she loved it!

Later in the day, I met back up with them to take some portraits of Phillip and Cindy before they headed out to their celebration dinner, and it was such a joy to document their love for each other. When I posted a preview photo to my Facebook page, I mentioned that since I usually spend my time with young couples just beginning their lives together, it was wonderful to see a couple still going strong after 30 years. When I told them this, Cindy said, “Oh, it just keeps getting better!” You can tell that this outlook on life has really influenced the rest of the family, because it was so obvious, having Jenna and Kyle be there while we were shooting, that they have an endless respect and love for their parents. The whole family was truly an inspiration to be around that day, and I’m beyond honored they chose me to capture it all.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that they ALL work together at their family business, Alabama Aquarium and Pond. (Even Jenna’s husband and Kyle’s girlfriend!) It was so fun to listen to them chat business throughout the day, and to even get to see some of their beautiful work when we went to one of their clients’ homes for the portrait session. Highly recommended for your aquarium and pond needs! :)

Thank you, Moon family! xoxo

The third Moon child, Terra, was unable to be present because she lives out in California, so they FaceTimed her to join in on the fun. :)

At the end of the day, we gave Phillip and Cindy their wedding album to look through on the dock together. I think it was an emotional moment for everyone, and the perfect way to wrap up our session.

I had such a great time with you guys, and hope you had the happiest of anniversaries!

Melissa + Richard // An American Village Wedding

Melissa and Richard are just FUN to be around. From the moment I met them at their engagement session, they had me laughing nonstop, so I knew their wedding day would be full of excitement and joy. It didn’t disappoint! I was also super excited to shoot my first wedding at American Village in Montevallo. It’s modeled after a colonial village, and now serves as an educational institution. The ceremony was held in the colonial-style chapel, and the reception was in a big red barn close by. It all felt so classic and patriotic. :)

Despite the rain that came and went throughout the day, everyone was in high spirits. It was also the official first day of football season for Alabama AND Auburn fans, so there was an extra helping of celebration happening. Few things beat fall in the South, in my personal opinion. ;)

Let’s get on to the photos! Huge thanks to Mary Margaret Smith for second shooting… you’ll see some of her lovely shots below.

Big shout out to the fabulous Brittany Benton Massey for doing amazing hair and makeup for Melissa and ALL of her bridesmaids. This girl’s talent knows no bounds, and it’s always a delight to work with her!

My heart melted when Melissa and her dad saw each other for the first time.

Melissa, you’re STUNNING!

Right after the ceremony, we had a window of about 5 minutes of no rain to jump out of the golf cart for portraits of Melissa and Richard. So thankful for this time, because the light and the scenery were just absolute perfection, and these two make quite the couple, huh?

Aaaaand we got a rainbow out of it! :D

Congratulations you two! Thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of such a fun day!

Jessica + John // A Riverbank Engagement

When Jessica and I originally began talking about ideas for her engagement session with John, she was really enthusiastic about the idea of shooting at a blueberry-picking farm. These two LOVE (and I mean, LOVE) blueberries, so it would be really special for them. Unfortunately, by the time they were able to schedule the session, all the farms said they were all picked over, so we scrapped that idea. Instead, we decided to meet up in historic downtown Florence at none other than the police station… where they originally met!

But don’t worry… we still managed to incorporate the blueberries a little later in the session. (AND to top it off they sent me home with a goodie bag full of blueberry-flavored coffee K-cups and homemade peanut butter cookies! YUM!) Keep scrolling and see for yourself!

Yep, they’re SUPER cute together.

As we were driving to the next location, Jessica had a last minute suggestion for a spot to shoot. We drove up a windy road, and suddenly the most amazing view of the river and downtown Florence came into view. I mean, wow. Way to go, Jessica!

Love, love, loooooove.

Jessica and John, thank you both so much for such a wonderful afternoon! I can’t wait to head back up to Florence for your wedding next month! :)
