Heather + Franklin // A Mad Men-Inspired Engagement Session

When Heather first emailed me about shooting her and Franklin’s engagement photos while I was in California recently, she said that I probably wouldn’t remember them from Susan and Lane’s wedding two years ago. WRONG. I don’t think there’s any way I could’ve forgotten Franklin’s hilarious dancing, and Heather is this gorgeous redhead that I was sure I had seen somewhere before. (She actually reminds me a lot of Isla Fisher, I think.) And these two are exactly the kinds of cool Californians you want to be friends with. Franklin’s a writer, mostly for sitcoms, and Heather’s an actress, and they have an adorable apartment in a gorgeous L.A. neighborhood. But because they’ve got roots in Virginia, which is where they’ll be returning for their wedding, they’ve still got some of that Southern charm which I of course love. ;)

I knew that they wanted to do a sort of retro-inspired shoot, but when I arrived at their house and saw all the costumes they had collected, I about died. And THEN when we got in the car and drove to the Neutra house, which they had rented especially for the shoot, I really started freaking out. Richard Neutra is a famous architect known for his incredible mid-century modern designs, and this particular house had been completely preserved and is now open to the public for tours. When we pulled up, I turned to Heather and asked if she had ever happened to see W Magazine’s Brad and Angelina editorial from 2005, before Mad Men was even a thing, where they played a family in the 60’s. (I have always wanted to recreate something like that.) She immediately said, “YES!! I have been looking at those photos all week for inspiration!” Ladies and gentlemen, if that isn’t a match made in mid-century heaven, I don’t know what is. ;)

So as we all celebrate the return of Don Draper, let’s bask in a little 60’s domestic bliss, shall we?

After we left the Neutra house, we headed back to their apartment to finish up. The California light was of course to die for, and now I really want a lemon tree in my backyard. :)

You two! Are so ridiculously good-looking!

Heather and Franklin, thank you SO much for making a dream shoot of mine come to life! You both are so sweet, and I wish you the absolute best of luck for your marriage! xo

Susan + Lane // An At-Home Anniversary Session » Morgan Trinker Photography | Birmingham, AL - […] weeks about my recent trip to California to photograph Mary and Clay’s SmogShoppe wedding and Heather and Franklin’s Mad Men-inspired engagement session. But the whole reason that trip ever existed? It’s thanks to those two sitting on the couch […]

Mary + Clay // A Banksy-Inspired Smog Shoppe Wedding

This wedding was featured on Green Wedding Shoes.

Although I usually like to start off by telling a little about a couple’s story, I think Clay’s description of the first time he met Mary does the job far better than I ever could:

“Mary and I first met at the romantic Shangri-La known as “Big Wangs,” a hot wings sports bar in Hollywood. Our mutual friend, Duncan Birmingham, had just come back into town and he invited a few people to meet up for drinks. At the time, I was working as the production designer on a play, and had therefore been painting and hammering nails all day. I was also wearing my “Got Tickets to the Gun Show?” t-shirt that had arrows pointing to my narrow biceps to further entice passersby. Fortunately, I had just polished off a plate of garlic wings with Duncan and a few dudes when Mary and her friend Heather arrived. I remember thinking, “well this girl is never gonna like me. I look and smell like a moron.” Little did I know this was just Mary’s type.”

After bonding over a mutual love for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and sweat pants, these two fell head over heels in love. Years (and one very adorable adopted Shar Pei-golden retriever mix named Kima) later, they stood in front of their friends and family and committed to love and support each other for the rest of their lives.

I first met Mary and Clay almost two years ago while photographing their good friends Lane and Susan’s wedding in Salt Lake City. When they contacted me about flying me to L.A. to shoot their wedding at the Smog Shoppe, I’m pretty sure I did some loud girly squealing. I’ve literally been dreaming of shooting a wedding at this venue for a long time, and I just couldn’t believe my luck. Plus, I hadn’t been to Los Angeles since middle school, and even though I was terrified at the thought of maneuvering the highways there, those sunny skies were calling my name. I keep telling people that this weekend was a quintessential California experience (at least from the perspective of a born-and-bred Southerner, which is probably just as flawed as how everyone else thinks of us, ha), from our near death experience on the interstate to celebrity sightings (my friend Carly Bish, who came along to second shoot with me, walked right past Lance Bass, and while I was getting ready for another session the following day, Ed Helms drove by) to the fact that I got to photograph the marriage of a director and a producer. Oh, and we did eat In ‘n Out for dinner our last night in town. ;)

But anyway, enough with my giddiness. Mary and Clay are such an incredible and sweet couple, and I’m honored they chose me to document their wedding day. I hope you enjoy!

Mary wore her mother’s Japanese wedding gown, which was also worn by her sister at her wedding. Incredibly, no one had to have it altered, and it was in pristine condition. I was pretty much obsessed with it. Also, the Culver Hotel, where everyone was getting ready, was just a feast of eye candy.

Mary: STOP IT WITH HOW GORGEOUS YOU ARE. Seriously.

Words cannot describe how much I love this next image.

The royal blue dress Mary changed into for the reception was another jaw-dropper.

Mary and Clay, I can’t thank you enough for trusting me to capture your love. It was an amazing experience.

Kimber - OMG. The bride’s dresses. The Succulent wall. So beautiful! Love this one, Morgan!

Melissa + Greg // A Wedding with a Cave and the Luck o’ the Irish

Melissa and Greg’s wedding was a special one for me for several reasons. Melissa found me at a bridal show last January, and shortly after she won a free engagement session due to the super sweet words of friends and family who wrote in to nominate her and Greg. (It’s hard to believe that’s been over a year ago!) Then, when Kelly and I decided to start Bham Bride last year (which is kind of on hold due to how busy we both are, but we hope to revive it someday), Melissa was by FAR our biggest cheerleader. She has participated so much on our Facebook page, and she even used Bham Bride as inspiration for a big project her last semester in art school. She has essentially been the ideal Bham Bride and Kelly and I have come to love her. :)

One of the first things Melissa told me when she described their vision for the day was that they wanted to get married in a cave. A cave! How awesome. Also, their wedding day was St. Patrick’s Day, and it was so fitting given all the green and the redheads present. Let’s just say I fit right in. ;)

Their wedding was also incredibly nostalgic for me, because it reminded me SO much of my own wedding almost four years ago. Seriously. I was showing my mom some of these photos when I was back home a few days ago, and before I said a word, she was like, “Wow- it looks so much like your wedding!” We even had the same first dance song, “First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes. That’s how much Melissa and I are on the same wavelength. :)

Anyway, lucky for both of us, Kelly was available to second shoot, and we all had so much fun. And now I’ll stop jabbering and get to the photos…

The insanely talented Celine Russell did a phenomenal job of bringing Melissa’s Zooey Deschanel-inspired hair and makeup to life. I mean, how gorgeous is she?!

Such a sweet First Look.

We then headed to DeSoto Caverns for their ceremony, which was in a gorgeous cave.

I loved how they chose to go the nontraditional route and have a co-ed bridal party. (Although I feel like we’re still trying to figure out what to call them… bridesmen? groomsmaids?)

Melissa makes the most adorable faces ever.

Then it was back to Morgan Creek Vineyards for the reception… and of course some lovely golden light portraits!

I kid you not… one of the sweetest moments in all my wedding memories happened when Melissa’s stepdad, Mark, brought her out on the dance floor to dance. When the song started playing, Kelly and I looked at each other and I think it was all we could do not to sob, because the lyrics to the song (“Stepfather of the Bride” by Mike McLaughlin) were just so poignant and emotional. I love that Melissa didn’t hold back her tears. :)

These days there aren’t that many couples who go crazy with the cake feeding, so it was kind of awesome to see these two smash it.

When Melissa’s maid of honor and sister Ashley got up to give her speech, she said that Melissa had joked with her that it was Irish tradition, if the younger sister married before the older one, that the older one would dance with a broom. So Ashley decided to do it for her. So awesome. :)

Congratulations you two! I hope you guys are having an amazing time honeymooning it up!

Melissa M. Williams - we are so happy with these pictures, you and kelly are so awesome and eveyone loved you guys being there, you totally fit in! these are images that we will have for the rest of our lives and are so happy that you were a part of our very special day! thank you for EVERYTHING!!!

Sarah - I heart redheads, especially you! These picture are great! I mean, lighting in a CAVE?! Ahh! BUT they look great. You can tell how much fun the couple have together. Tillykke!

Amanda - A wedding in a CAVE….I love it! I love traditions just like the rest of them, but on the other hand I love to do things out of the norm. I love that about this couple! The photos of the first look were so sweet. I will have to say the photo of the little girl with the black mask and some bling on her finger, well, it took my breath away….sooo precious. Great job, as usual!
