Sprinklebakes // The Blogger, The Baker, The Fabulous Girl

If you don’t know Heather, you should. And if you’ve never met her, or visited her incredible blog Sprinklebakes, I’d be willing to bet that you’ve pinned a recipe or two of hers, maybe without even realizing it. I mean, I see her vanilla bean mini donuts with turquoise frosting almost every time I log onto Pinterest! So it came as no surprise to me when she was offered a book deal, and I was over the moon (and a little terrified) when she emailed me to ask if I’d be interested in doing some head shots and a promo video for the book’s release.

Heather’s creativity knows no bounds, and we share a deep love for color and whimsy and Kate Spade and Bri Emery’s blog, so it truly felt like a match made in heaven. When we first began brainstorming ideas for the video, we had initially settled on a semi-documentary-style approach, where we would follow Heather as she baked and talked about the influence of art on her work, but her book editor pretty quickly suggested we go a more lighthearted route… something that would be much more likely to go viral on YouTube. His idea was to make Biscuit (Heather’s pug, who makes many cameos on her blog) the star of the show, and have HIM be the one doing the baking. A dog? Baking? We initially kind of freaked out about that, because the last thing we wanted to do was make something hokey and cheesy. But I absolutely stand corrected, because using that as a jumping off point actually led to an overall concept that we’re both super proud of and actually seems to stand out from the typical earnest, serious kinds of promotional videos out there. Without giving too much away, here’s what we came up with:

How cute is Biscuit? Seriously?

Heather debuted the video on her blog last week in a lovely post that also included a delicious recipe for mint-white chocolate mousse cake, and it’s been getting such a great response that I wanted to share it here too, along with some of the photos I took of Heather. How gorgeous is her mane of platinum blonde hair? And that Kate Spade purse? TO DIE FOR.

Also, you have to be sure to grab a copy of the whole reason for this shoot… the book! You can pre-order it on Amazon here, and it will officially hit stands May 1. I’ve seen it in person, and it is a BEAUT. A must-have for anyone who loves baking and/or art.

Heather, thank you so much for allowing me to be apart of such an incredible, challenging, creative, and FUN project! It was an amazing experience.

Susan + Lane // An At-Home Anniversary Session

There’s been a lot of talk here on the blog the past couple of weeks about my recent trip to California to photograph Mary and Clay’s SmogShoppe wedding and Heather and Franklin’s Mad Men-inspired engagement session. But the whole reason that trip ever existed? It’s thanks to those two sitting on the couch in the photo above: Lane and Susan. You see, almost exactly two years ago, back when Jamie and I were living in Salt Lake City, and my photography business was still a fledgling little thing, Lane and Susan somehow miraculously found me on a Google search for photographers and took a chance on me to shoot their wedding. You have to know how incredible this is, because their wedding was like, an ideal wedding for me. Exactly the kind of funky, creative, artsy wedding that I was dying to put in my portfolio. And because Lane and Susan were living in L.A., and brought all of their L.A. friends out to SLC with them for the wedding, I got to meet some amazing people, including Mary, Clay, Heather, and Franklin, who all also hired me to photograph them. My friendship with Lane and Susan has literally opened up so many doors for me, and when I think about defining moments in this whole crazy journey, they always come to mind.

So, when they asked if I’d be interested in coming to their new house while I was in California to do an anniversary session, I got really excited. Of course I was excited to see them again, but I also knew their house would be styled to quirky, creative perfection and that I would finally get to meet their brood of cats and their new baby chickens. I knew that one of the cats in particular (out of I honestly don’t know how many), named The Internet (yes), was kind of the favorite, and I had heard so much talk about him that I couldn’t wait to see him in person. In fact, Susan told me beforehand that pretty much the only thing Lane cared about was getting a photo of himself with The Internet for his desk at work, so I knew he was a pretty big deal. :)

They also recently got a brood of baby chicks for their backyard, all named after president’s wives. (My favorite was Mary Todd, who has a bit of a misshapen beak and furry feet, and it’s too darn cute.) And if THAT weren’t enough, they also told me that they’re expecting their first human baby! YAY! (I hear they’re taking suggestions for names, and since Broccoli is high on Lane’s list, you might consider taking them up on it. ;) )

Anyway, I think you get the picture… I love these two, and I’m so happy to once again be showing off their oh-so-sweet love and their creative, colorful, fun lives. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do!

THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is The Internet:

Gail - SOOO much to love about this session! WHERE did Susan get that baby onesie? And I posted this on Facebook but I would love to know the artist who did that self-portrait of them! I want one of my hubs and I!

What an INCREDIBLE couple. I don’t know Susan and Lane, but instantly know I would love to sit down in their home for a cup of tea, pet The Internet (ha! cute!) and get to! GREAT work as always, love!

Brooke Schultz - I LOVE all the lifestyle stuff you’re posting lately. It feels so right. So beautiful.

Lauren Kim Photography - I love how organic and simple these beautiful photos are!

Anne + Steven // An Intimate Wedding on the Beach

One thing that I love so much about being a wedding photographer is getting to witness how each individual couple chooses to say their vows and celebrate their love, from big, traditional church weddings to intimate ceremonies on the beach, which is what Anne and Steven chose to do. Having a big wedding just wouldn’t have reflected their style or personality (remember their engagement session at the aquarium?), so instead they invited about 25 of their closest friends and family members down to Navarre Beach on Florida’s Gulf Coast to surround them as they celebrated eight years of being together and promised the rest of their lives to each other.

Anne has a deep love for the ocean, which began as a child when she watched The Little Mermaid over and over. (For the record: she knows almost every line. Seriously.) So she chose to let her long red hair down and had a custom dress made by a friend, which she ombre-dyed turquoise at the bottom to mimic the sea’s colors. Anne and Steven’s friends and family also played a major role in the whole day, from making all the food for the reception from scratch the morning of the wedding to officiating to decorating, which made it that much more meaningful.

Personally, I loved getting to be at the beach to shoot this wedding, because I’m a huge fan of crazy bright colors, and Florida has plenty of ’em. I came home with sand in every nook and cranny of my equipment bags, car, and in between my toes, but it was totally worth it. Plus, the sunset on the beach? Can’t beat it!

Enjoy!

Congratulations Anne and Steven! Thank you for giving me the honor of documenting your love!
