Stuff I Love // Folksy Duos, Group Singalongs, and Things That Are Green (Even Drinks)

It’s a new month (which just so happens to be my favorite month- AND my birthday month!), and you know what that means! Time for another roundup of things I’m loving these days. Besides, of course, the obvious: the crazy gorgeous sunny weather we’ve been having. I LOVE SPRING.

1. Dead Fingers

I know the name is a little off-putting (apparently it was inspired by a playground game that I never played, so if you don’t get the reference then you’re probably, like me, expecting something along the lines of Insane Clown Posse), but I saw this duo play at Bottletree last weekend and OH GOODNESS, they are so good. The only reason Jamie and I went in the first place was because our friends Sam and Spencer told us they had heard Maria Taylor might be taking the stage at some point. To understand this, you have to know a little back story: Back in my freshman year of college, my friend gave me a copy of 11:11, her first album, and my roommate and I became OBSESSED. I have followed and adored her and her music for the past almost 7 years now, but I had no idea until we moved here to Birmingham that she actually lives here when she’s not recording and touring. (Her song “Birmingham 1982” is one of my all-time favorites… go listen!) In fact, Sam and Spencer share some of the same circle of friends as her and her siblings Kate and Macey and have hung out with her before, which of course makes me think that someday we’ll become BFFs. On New Year’s Eve, we saw Macey play at the J. Clyde (and we saw their dad as well), and Jamie and I realized that we had also previously seen HIM perform as part of Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley band several years ago.

But fast forward…. So Maria’s sister Kate married Taylor Hollingsworth (who we also remembered from being in the Mystic Valley band for the crazy head shaking he does on stage and his super unique voice), and together they formed Dead Fingers and just released their first album last week. I had no idea what to expect going into it, but from the second they took the stage, they electrified the room with the unique blend of their vocals and their adorable-married-indie-folksy-couple vibe. Seriously, if you love the Civil Wars or She & Him, you will love them… maybe more, to be honest. I love that their chemistry isn’t weird and/or put on to sell records… they are ACTUALLY a couple and you feel like you can root for them without a guilty conscience. You can find their album here.

2. Group Singalongs at Weddings (photo from Rob and Jean’s wedding last August)

This is something that I’ve come to absolutely adore about southern weddings. While the rest of the country is no stranger to a good singalong song (hellooooo “Don’t Stop Believin'”), I feel like the specific fraternity/sorority culture here contributes to the widespread love for putting one arm around a friend and one in the air and belting out the lyrics to a song that everyone knows the words to. Here in Alabama, I would say we hear “Sweet Home Alabama” at at least 80% of the weddings we shoot (with the special addition of “Roll Tide Toll” to the chorus, depending on who the majority of the guests are fans of ;) ), but some of the other favorites include Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel,” Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried,” and Alabama’s “Dixieland Delight.” I don’t know what it is, but there’s something kinda magical to me about everyone gathering around and belting out a song together, singing their lungs out, and with those last songs in particular, meaning every word and singing with pride. It creates a powerful sense of community, even if only for three and a half minutes, and most of the time you can find me singing right along with ’em behind my camera. ;)

3. Boathouse Farms’s Green Goodness

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not what you might call an example of perfect health. I eat wayyy too many carbs. If I ever become lactose intolerant or allergic to gluten, I don’t know what I’ll do. So to supplement the lack of vitamins I get from real food, I’ve started drinking Green Goodness, which has a ton of fruit, supplements, and other fun stuff (broccoli and spinach, anyone?) packed in it. It looks pretty gross, but if you can get past the color, it actually tastes pretty dang good. It makes me feel like one of those kids whose mom has to trick them into eating healthy food, but hey…. gotta take it where you can get it, right?

4. The Voice

I’ve never gotten too sucked in by reality TV, especially when it comes to talent competitions (the exception being Project Runway, of course). But last year, when I saw previews for The Voice, something about it just drew me in, and I began watching and fell in love. There’s something about the concept and format that intrigues me, but maybe what I love most is the personalities of the the coaches and watching them interact with each other and with the singers. It’s a pretty strong testament to the power of personality, actually, because prior to watching the show, I hated Blake Shelton’s music and thought Adam Levine’s voice sounded like nails on a chalkboard. But after watching them on the show, and seeing how hilarious and genuine and kind they are, I actually found myself being more open to their music. In fact, Blake’s song “Honey Bee” was one of my faves last year. WHO WOULD’VE THOUGHT.

This year I’ve gotten Jamie hooked too, but he insists that if Tony Vincent doesn’t make it through the battle rounds, he’s not watching anymore. We’ll see about that. ;)

Also: Cee Lo’s cat.

Enough said.

Hope you guys are having a fantastic March so far! If there’s anything YOU’RE loving right now, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below. :)

Aunt Heather - I too love THE VOICE! We watch it every week…however, I was a fan of Blake’s before the show….I love his sense of humor! At this point in time I am lovin’ an awesome devotional book called “Jesus Calling”…..every day is a confirmation for why we are here. Also, Laura Story’s “Blessings” CD….especially the title song on the CD…”Blessings”….such meaningful, powerful words……and in a totally opposite direction from the previous two…..a good day thrifting (I LOVE MY GOODWILL!)……stay tuned…..”Hunger Games” comes out in a couple of weeks!!

Aunt Heather - Sorry for posting 2 comments…..In this very second I’m NOT lov’n my computer…..it told me the first one didn’t post!! Ugghhh!!!

Aunt Heather - My computer is being ridiculous!!! It told me that the first comment did NOT post……(but did). Sorry for repeating myself!!

katie o. - I totally agree with you! I swear I watch the show strictly for the judges. And even though Adam Levine sounds like a chick, I love him. Just heard he’s going to have a small role on American Horror Story and I’m pretty much as giddy as a school girl.

And happy birthday month to you!

Kayla and Chris // Walking in Memphis

This week I made a day trip up to Memphis to shoot Chris and Kayla’s engagement session, and I have to admit I was super nervous, because the weather forecast did not looking promising, and this time of year in the south, you really never know what you’re going to get. When I first arrived in town, my stomach dropped because rain was literally pouring from the sky. While I don’t mind an overcast- even drizzly- shoot by any means, a downpour makes things quite a bit more complicated. Miraculously, 30 minutes before we were scheduled to begin, the skies literally cleared, and we ended up getting an afternoon full of sunshine, big dramatic clouds, and a glorious sunset. (And yes, quite a bit of wind too… but I was kind of loving it. ;) ) It was one of those incredible things that just made me feel so thankful, and our session was just an absolute blast.

Chris and Kayla are just about as sweet as can be. Not only did they greet me with a Starbucks gift card to get coffee for the drive home (aw!), but they also pretty much immediately jumped into the session like old pros- laughing, joking, being ridiculously cute together. I feel like I hardly had to do anything! And I loved watching how attentive Chris was to Kayla, always making sure she was happy, and being a good sport for all our crazy ideas. And Kayla’s freckles? Pretty flipping adorable!

What I also loved about this session was how it ended up turning into a mini tour of downtown Memphis. We started at the National Ornamental Metal Museum, which had really cool art sculptures all over the grounds, and then we headed to the train station, passed by the Lorraine Motel (where Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed and which has since been turned into the National Civil Rights Museum), saw the views from the top of the Peabody Hotel, and ended the afternoon on Beale Street. Despite having grown up in Tennessee in cities everywhere from Nashville to Knoxville, I actually never visited Memphis until last October, and this was the first time I got to see the attractions. Maybe next time I go I’ll hit up Graceland. ;)

But for now… enjoy!

Big thanks to Chris and Kayla for our adventure, and I can’t wait to come back in September for your wedding! :)

Angela - This is definitely one of my favorites. I wanna go to Memphis!

Gail - These are GORGEOUS! I think my favorite shot is the one in front of The Peabody!

And while we’re on the topic of Memphis songs, don’t forget March Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis” — love that tune!

katie o. - Adore that last black and white shot. So sweet. And they just look so happy together! Such gorgeous colors across the board too. So pretty.

Kimber - Gail is right! Walkin’ in Memphis is a classic and I love that that’s the title of this post. This shoot is gorgeous and love is coming out of all the pictures! Beautiful!

Sarah - Gorgeous work, Morgan! The black and white photo of them is especially wonderful.

Amanda - “Then I’m walking in Memphis, Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale, Walking in Memphis, But do I really feel the way I feel”. You did a great job capturing Kayla and Chris’ feelings..they look so much in love. A few of my favorites are the streetcar and the Peabody. You can SEE their love in the shot with the Peabody sign in the background. But, my absolute favorite is the one with them on the hill. The beauty of that picture made me tear up!! It looks like a bit of heaven….black, white, blue and those rays coming out of the clouds….I am holding back the tears. Our God is such an amazing God giving us glorious scenery for shots like this! I am incredibly proud of you, Morgan!

Sleepless Nights, Vegas Fun, and Lots o’ Learning // WPPI 2012

Yesterday I got back from Las Vegas, where Kelly and I spent several days at WPPI, an annual convention for wedding and portrait photographers. To say I’m still recovering is an understatement. What is it about Vegas that can suck the life right out of you? (And the money right out of your wallet… and we didn’t even gamble!) But we had SUCH a great time, so I wanted to post a quick recap with some of my favorite Instagram iPhone photos from the week.

It was our second time going, which actually made it a pretty different experience from the first time I went two years ago. (I didn’t go last year, but Kelly did, and that was her first time.) The first time, you can’t help but be overwhelmed the entire time. The whole experience, from the trade show to the classes to Vegas itself, is just sensory overload. The first time I went, I spent HOURS on the trade show floor, making sure I looked at everything at least 3 times. I also made an effort to go to more of the classes, and since I was still pretty new to photography, I learned a lot of valuable information.

But this time around, since we’ve both more or less chosen our album companies and a lot of the other products we use, and we’re not interested in switching, we skipped over a LOT of the trade show, and instead just focused on a few booths we were interested in (some of the standouts: Smilebooth, With Etiquette, and Pinhole Pro) and spent the rest of the time meeting and chatting with people. I also felt a lot less scared and intimidated this time, and instead of freaking out every time I saw a “celebrity” photographer, we usually would just go up and chat. If there’s one thing this WPPI experience taught me, it’s that all those West Coast photographers I so adore (and feel SO inferior to) are real people too. They’re normal. They’re nice. But more on that in a second.

One of the speakers we saw on the trade show floor the first day was Jesh de Rox (whom I saw speak two years ago also). He is truly one of the most inspiring photographers you will meet. And I wasn’t embarrassed AT ALL when Kelly volunteered us to be “kids” for a portrait session demonstration. (As if it was really a stretch, since people think we’re 15 half the time anyway.) Go check out his Beloved movement… it really is revolutionary, and worth the investment if you feel stuck in a rut when it comes to posing clients and achieving natural, real moments and expressions.

That night, we got all gussied up to go to Airplanes and Blazers, THE party of the year for anyone who’s anyone in the photography community. ;) Let me start by saying that I am NOT by any means a party-ing kind of girl. I treasure my nine hours of sleep a night, and I normally can’t stand being in noisy, smoky bars and clubs. But this party? I haven’t had so much fun since our wedding! The beauty of it is that everyone already has something in common, and you recognize so many familiar faces, that it felt like dancing the night away with a bunch of friends instead of just strangers. (Also, since the majority of people there were married, you didn’t have to worry about creepy guys making a move… whew!) I really feel like so many people there are the types- like me— who NEVER go out, so to have the opportunity to let loose was pretty amazing. Also, the Flash Dance did an INSANE job of DJ-ing. People were tearing up the dance floor!

What was also super cool about that party was all the people we got to meet and ended up hanging out with late into the night. Awhile back, when Angie and Matt Sloan came through Birmingham to shoot a wedding, Kelly emailed them and asked if they wanted to meet up. They did, and they ended up being incredibly nice and humble. Fast forward to last year, when Kelly ran into them at A&B, and she ended up dancing with them all night long. THIS year, we ran into them as soon as we showed up, and were more or less welcomed into their “cool club.” (I can’t even believe how cheesy this must sound, so bear with me.) We were basically dancing all night with them, Nate and Jaclyn from The Image is Found, Justin and Amelia Lyon, Jesse and Whitney Chamberlain of Our Labor of Love, Jeff Newsom and his wife, Hugh Forte, James Moes, and all sorts of other awesome people that we previously only semi-stalked online. I honestly wasn’t sure if I’d ever have the guts to have a conversation with any of these people, let alone hang out with them. Can you tell I might still be a little bitter about not being popular in high school? ;)

Anyway, after the party ended (they literally had to turn the lights on and kick us out), we hung out in one of the hotel restaurants with the whole group, and (at four o’clock in the morning) then caught a taxi with some of them to this hole-in-the-wall place called Ronald’s, which apparently specializes in vegan doughnuts. Tasty!

Needless to say, by the time we got back to our room (after 5:00 am)… my body HATED me. We crashed, but then I got a text at 8:00 am and we couldn’t fall back asleep, so we attempted to go out and make something of the day.

After realizing that we were basically zombies, we decided to nap and try again, and then we went back out onto the strip to take in some of the sights. First stop: Serendipity, for their famous frozen hot chocolate. My mouth is watering just thinking about it….

Even though we had fun sightseeing, we still felt pretty miserable, so we went back to bed really early so we could be coherent for Wednesday, the last day of the conference. We started the day at the Paris hotel, where I ate a delicious chicken, brie, and apple crepe, a chocolate croissant, and drank 3-4 cups of Intelligentsia coffee. (BUZZED.) You might remember that Kelly and I are semi-Francophiles, so we loved dining outdoors in a cafe-like setting. Don’t make fun.

That afternoon, we saw Justin and Mary speak, and I can’t imagine a more perfect way to end the trip. There are just no words to describe how inspiring Mary is, and it seems impossible to believe that in a two-hour time span, someone could transform a person’s entire way of thinking, but that’s exactly what she did. I don’t want to give too much away, but if you head over to their blog, you will NOT be disappointed. These two are some of the most generous, humble, knowledgable photographers I’ve met, and to be honest, they blew all of the other speakers WAY out of the water. :)

Yesterday morning, we said goodbye to another whirlwind Vegas adventure. No matter how much fun I had, I was SO ready to be home. Now it’s time to soak in all of my experiences and use the inspiration I’ve gathered to better my business and my life.

To wrap it up, I wanted to share this video by Stillmotion that Justin and Mary posted on their blog this morning. They were filming part of this during their presentation, and it really is a brilliant way to get a taste of WPPI through 4 different perspectives: a first-time attendee, a veteran attendee, an exhibitor, and a speaker. There are also some clips from Airplanes and Blazers in there, which is pretty awesome. Enjoy!

4 people, 1 story. This is my WPPI. from stillmotion on Vimeo.

Cat - *Dreaming of being there next year* Awesome recap.

Serena - I totally agree with what you said about Airplanes & Blazers - it’s awesome to hang out with other photographers and not get creeped on by random strangers!

It was awesome meeting you & Kelly - I love both of your guys’ work. Hope you two had a blast at WPPI and I hope to see you again next year! Or if you’re in the DC/MD/VA area… or if I’m over in your neck of the woods! (Keep in touch until then!)

Carrie Joy - I LOVE seeing your WPPI experience :) I really want to be there next year. It’s my goal. I knew I wouldn’t have the money to go this year, so I actually made it a goal in June to go to WPPI 2013. I want your tips before next year! :)

Kaity Whitman - Sounds like you two and me and my friend had the exact same experience day by day it’s weird! Glad you Kelly had an amazing time at WPPI this year. Maybe next year we should all meet up :D

Kaity Whitman - The video from Justin and Mary, I’m the girl taking a picture with Jerry Ghionis at minute 1.09! Wow!

Lily Hye Soo - Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Seriously, as stated above, dreaming of going there. haha one day maybe.

Sara Adams - Wow! Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun! Admittedly I am way jealous since I couldn’t swing it this year but I already have a plan and a date with another fellow first-timer for next year. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you and getting me pumped for 2013!

THE Kelly - I would’ve thought you’d make the EIGHT DOLLAR PHOTO a little bit bigger. I’m so glad we went, so glad we took a cab so that we could wear heels, and so glad we are so over being uncool. Here’s to next year and skipping the convention part in favor of partying every night and desert (and dessert) shoots every day.
