If you feel like you’ve seen these two before, it’s not just your imagination. Zack and Ginger were the perfect models for my St. Patrick’s Day shoot a few months ago, because like I said then, not only are they redheaded lovers of all things Irish, they also are an actual engaged couple. We decided they needed an engagement session to get some portraits that weren’t at a fake wedding shoot, so we made plans for another session. ;) I *love* that they brought so many ideas to the table, and the end result is (in my opinion) so very “them.”
We started the afternoon at the Alabama Theater, which has sentimental value because it’s where Zack pulled off one of the greatest proposals ever. But first, I have to back up and explain that these two love movies, especially the great American classics. One of their absolute favorites is The Sound of Music. So when Zack asked Ginger if she wanted to go to a special screening of it at the theater, she immediately agreed and didn’t think anything of it. When they walked up to the ticket booth and handed over their tickets, she still wasn’t thinking anything of it. When they walked into the theater and it was completely empty, she still wasn’t thinking anything of it. (She now says she just figured they were early. :)) But when the lights went down and the movie began, instead of the “hills are alive” opening scene she was expecting, she was seeing her story played out on the big screen. Zack remembers having to wait on his knee for a long time next to her, because it took awhile for her to figure out what was happening and look over at him. But when she did, he presented her with a journal (seen below) in which he had carved out a little nook for her ring inside. DYING, y’all. DY-ING.
So needless to say, the theater was a perfect place to start their session. And to make things extra fun, they brought along bags full of costumes inspired by some of their favorite movies: The Sound of Music (of course), Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter. SO great! I love when couples bring ideas like this to the table, because it’s not every day I get to shoot engagement sessions with costumes. ;)
After we left the theater, we headed to English Village, one of our mutually favorite spots in Birmingham because of Chez Lulu and the generally European feel of the area. And even though the skies decided to open up and pour down rain on us, we decided it was only fitting for the scenery. Luckily we brought our matching umbrellas, so we made very good use of them, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. You know what they say about life giving you lemons…
Enjoy!
