Lane and Susan // Engaged

Where do I even BEGIN with Lane and Susan?

A couple of months ago, Susan called me to ask about my availability to photograph their wedding in April. She and Lane had found my blog and liked the fact that I use all kinds of vintage-y stuff, and LUCKY ME, we are a perfect match stylistically. I mean, they work in the film industry. They are actually in town to go to Sundance and- get this- watch films. And get paid for it. Man, almost as good as MY job! Plus, they have fantastic indie-ish style. Oh, and five cats. One of which is named The Internet. Two of which are married. And yes, there was a ceremony with 50 close friends and family members in attendance. They’re planning their own wedding (which will be at the super-kitschy and amazing Natural History Museum… dinosaur bones and wedding dresses? yessss) from L.A., where they live now. Susan is originally from Utah, and they have a lot of friends and family here, so they’ll be back in Salt Lake to get hitched this spring.

I knew I would love these guys when Susan emailed me ideas for their engagement session. Black and white and mod? Check! Color and graffiti and pizza and beer? Check and CHECK! What I didn’t know is how much more I would love them when I met them in person. Perhaps it’s the beauty of the internet, where we’ve had a chance to get to know each other via blogs and Twitter and whatnot, but I felt instantly at ease with them. I think it’s mostly due to how laidback and NICE they are. We met at the Pie, a pizza dive on the University of Utah campus, to capture a bit of their love for hanging out and enjoying pizza and beer. Their moms even met up with us to share some pizza, so it was good to get a little glimpse into their families as well. You guys, what can I say? This was one of the most fun and inspiring sessions I’ve ever done. Thank you for letting be there to document your love for each other. Which is completely infectious, by the way. I couldn’t help but smile around you. So without further ado, the pictures….

Firstly, Lane’s red hair and beard. AWESOME, no? Secondly, Susan’s facial expressions. Yes.

I think this might be my favorite parking garage wall ever. p.s. The whole morning had been disgustingly dreary and gray. Thankfully, when we walked out of the restaurant, Susan was all “Look! It’s the sun!” And indeed, it turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous afternoon. Oh, Utah. You and your unpredictability.

This was the first session I’ve shot with my new (well, new to me) 5D. These colors…. oh, these colors. I love this camera.

It was also the first time I’ve used my Fujifilm Instax camera, which is sorta like a Polaroid, except the prints are smaller, like credit card size. I adore the mysteriousness of using cameras like this. You truly never know what you’re gonna get, and you have very little control over the whole process. Which is actually pretty liberating. And as Lane pointed out, there’s something special about having a one-of-a-kind print.

Next we went to Susan’s sister’s house. Thank you Emily for letting us use it, even when you’re in the process of selling it! It’s an adorable bungalow-style house with so many fun vintage details. If you’re looking to buy, let me know, ’cause I know of a pretty eager seller who’d love to hear from you. :)

My favorite? The kitchen.

And here’s Lane’s grandmother’s ring, which Lane’s mother thought was just a piece of costume jewelry, until they went and had it appraised. Oh no…. it’s the REAL DEAL. Is it gorgeous or what? I love that Susan was like, I didn’t know I was a diamonds girl until I got this!

This next set was Susan’s idea. LOVE the drama and quirkiness of it.

Aaaaand I’m pretty sure this is my very fave. Are you KIDDING me? I was in heaven.

Oh, Susan. You’re so pretty.

Maybe my second fave….

And the end. But if you want more, and I know you need more Lane and Susan in your life, don’t forget to WATCH THE SLIDESHOW! (featuring “Light a Roman Candle with Me” by fun., the newest project from The Format frontman Nate Ruess. His music is just that…. fun, fun, fun!)

Lots of thankfulness

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of shooting a wedding with a local Salt Lake City photographer, Amy Little. I can’t even begin to tell you how ridiculous it is that I feel so close to someone I only met in person four days ago. But I DO. Amy stumbled upon my blog out of the blue and contacted me recently about meeting up for coffee and commiseration (because that’s what photographers do when they get together, DUH), and I was all, YES PLEASE. Because her personality is magnetic. We made an instant connection, what with our chaotic and spill-our-guts writing styles, the similarities in our journeys in building photography businesses, our insecurities and desires, our styles…. oh, everything, really. One morning last week I was checking my email (while I was still in bed, thanks to my trusty iPhone!), and I read this part of an email from her and SO laughed out loud:

WAHOOOOO, though, about you wanting to do the wedding!!!!!!! I’m so excited. It’s weird because I trust you and don’t even know you. Maybe it’s because you have red hair. I think there’s a rule that says you must be cool if you have wicked awesome hair like that…I’m trying to figure out a time to meet. thoughts? we can meet in jammies if that would be better for your immune system. we had a strict rule growing up that if you weren’t down with flopping in bed with the neighborhood (what kind of family was this?), you might as well just RSVP with a big fat “no”. Cause at some point during the visit, there will be flopping. Just sayin, I’m not afraid of cozy :)

And she is just that great, and then some, in person.

So as the wedding was progressing yesterday, I found myself stopping every now and again and just taking a deep breath and realizing the absolute amazingness of this job. Don’t get me wrong, now. Weddings are SO much work. I am never as tired or dehydrated or sore as I am after a long day of shooting. But at the same time, it’s one long adrenaline rush, and you find yourself just being so energized by the love between two people that you have the privilege of witnessing and documenting. One such moment occurred as I was shooting the bouquet toss on the dance floor to the sounds of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” (which I’m tempted to think was written specifically for bouquet tosses across America). I couldn’t help but dance around a bit, and my belly was full of a delicious meal that the couple so graciously provided us with, and I was surrounded by really happy people. And I kid you not, I started choking up. I come from a long line of criers, and I’ve been known to sniffle at an AllState commercial or two, but heck, I had only just met every single person in that room. That’s what being a part of a wedding will do to you. I love weddings. And people pay us to be there to photograph everything? To do something we love so much we could burst sometimes? It just doesn’t seem…. real.

And then on top of all that, to be able to do it alongside Amy, who is now a peer AND a friend, and her cousin Kristen, who balanced out our all-over-the-place creative personalities beautifully, was such an honor. And so much fun.

Amy has (also very graciously) allowed me to use some images I took on my blog, which I’m so excited to share with you after I’ve sent off the raw files to her and gotten some editing on. But I just couldn’t wait to put up this little sneak peek, because I love it so, and because I feel like I need to prove that I actually HAVE been doing some non-personal-related shooting lately. :) More to come, but for now, let us bask in the glow of Miriam and Daniel:
