Fun times from Lorraine and Dan’s wedding on Friday night! :)
Lorraine’s only request was that we do a recreation of the LOST cast promotional images with their bridal party. I was SUPER excited when she told me this idea, because I had never seen it done and had a pretty good feeling we could pull it off. This is actually 13 separate images combined into one, and I had a lovely assistant who was a guest at the wedding to move around my flash for me. It was definitely a team effort, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result!
Whew! It’s been a whirlwind of a weekend! On Friday, I had the pleasure of shooting Dan and Lorraine’s Old West meets Day of the Dead meets Pioneer Days wedding, and yesterday I shot Nathan and Camille’s yellow and green and vintage-y wedding. Both of these I will be working on this week, but since Camille and Nathan are now married, I had to share with you her bridal session that I shot a couple of weeks ago.
First of all, Camille is quite the adorable girl. And also a photographer’s dream, not only for her cute style, but also for her easygoing-ness. When I asked her if she had any particular location in mind for her shoot, she was all, nahhh…. I trust you. I. Trust. You. The three magic words! So I asked her to meet me in front of the cutest little boutique in downtown Salt Lake City that I absolutely drool over every time I pass it, Frosty Darling. Aqua and red/old vintage carnival/unique local art and handmade gifts? Pretty much perfect. So we started there and literally stayed within a block’s walking distance, stumbling upon treasure after treasure of cool walls and fun alleys and, yes, a cream-colored Mini Cooper. While I do like having a general plan in mind when I shoot, I honestly try not to overthink it, because usually, if I take the approach of “we’ll just roll with it and see what happens,” I end up being the most inspired.
So thank you Camille for trusting me, and for being so stinking adorable. And congratulations on now being Camille Johnson! And thank you Kelli for coming along to help out and even talk shop a little bit. :) You guys were a blast!
These next few? Totally shot in an alley. Although I don’t mind shooting in parks and such, just know that I can make just about any environment look “bridal” as long as the light is great. Which means that we don’t have to truck all over town to get a nice mix of urban and natural! I just love these.
Seriously, could we have had any better luck with this Mini Cooper parked by itself in the alley?!
…..or this yellow wall, which just happened to match their wedding colors?
I love bright colors and all, but sometimes there’s just nothing better or more classic than a beautiful black and white portrait.
These “green” portraits? Totally taken on the sidewalk of a semi-busy street. But you’d never know….
I love when we have wind to give girls that model-like flowy hair, but sometimes things get a little out of hand!
Debbie -What a darling bride! Beautiful dress. A contagious smile. And a great photographer. She reminds me a lot of you Morgan on your wedding day! Charming!
Kimber-Love, love, love the yellow wall, and the bride looks like so much fun to be around! Can’t wait to see the wedding shots!
Aunt Heather -I think this could be my favorite so far….def in the top 5! I loved the yellow wall and hydrant….beautiful girl……and the photographer!! Well…..I’m a little prejudice.
Anna -Morgan, These are beautiful, probably some of my favorites. You do great work. These brides are blessed to have you capture their day!
So despite all of the craziness of what’s been going on with my dad, I decided to make the trip to Colorado that I had been planning for several months now. It was a complete whirlwind. I got home from Tennessee last Wednesday around 6:30 pm, unpacked and repacked, and left for the airport again the next morning around 9 am. Yep! Whirlwind! But it was so good to spend time with some of my best friends, and to get to play with my little Jameson for six whole days. But more on him later. :) I had a lot of much-needed time of rest and relaxation, but I also stayed pretty darn busy while I was there, shooting six family sessions in four days. Cuh-razy! But so, so good. The Merkls and the Conways have been talking me up to all their friends, and I had the privilege of meeting and shooting not only their families, but also the families of some of their closest friends: the Haases, the Lantermans, and, first up in the blogging line, the Valluzzos!
Jamie and I originally met Mike and Jenn Valluzzo through Megan and Brandon back in Knoxville. What was so crazy is that just as we were all getting to know each other and hanging out, we all moved out west within a few months of each other: Mike and Jenn to Phoenix, Megan and Brandon to Boulder, and me and Jamie to Salt Lake City. So even though nobody lives in the same city anymore, what’s nice is that, thanks to really cheap flights on Southwest airlines, we’ve been able to meet up and visit several different times since we’ve been out here, usually at Megan and Brandon’s. I love those get-togethers! It just goes to show that you really can make those lifelong friendships, despite whatever distance is between you.
Megan and Jenn have been especially able to bond because they had their first babies within just a couple of months of each other. Sophia is only a little younger than Jameson, and everyone’s convinced that they WILL date one of these days. I mean, how awesome would that be?! This trip was the first time I’ve met Sophia, and oh my goodness, she’s adorable.
What I also loved about this trip is that I had a lot of good conversations with Jenn, who is in the beginning stages of pursuing a photography business of her own. It’s always really good to talk shop, and I can never have too many friends who are in the same boat as I am. I know we both wear our husbands out with the geeky things we get excited about, so it’s good to be able to have someone else around who can actually appreciate it! She came along with me for a couple of the sessions just to get a feel for how I work, but I warned her to not set her expectations too high, because I can sometimes be a hot mess! She insists that learned some good stuff, but I don’t know…. :) It honestly made me feel a lot more confident, being able to have at least some answers to other people’s questions. I’m pretty much an open book, because I only got to where I am because so many others have been open books for me. So to finally be on the teaching end of things, in addition to the learning, is pretty cool!
Anyway, on to the first Colorado session: The Valluzzos!
Sophia’s face here is priceless.
Megan suggested a park in Louisville for us to go to…. it was perfect! Great location, great sunset light, great-looking family… couldn’t ask for anything more!
This dress that Sophia is wearing was actually worn by Jenn when she was a baby. I love little special touches like that. :)
I don’t know about you, but I can never get too many fingers and toes shots!
Absolutely one of my faves.
And now, the slideshow! I used Jack Johnson’s “My Little Girl” because, well, it’s a great song. Especially for a family with a little girl. I used to not really like Jack Johnson at all, but this past year he’s really grown on me. I think this one’s adorable. Enjoy!
Jenn -I totally just teared up during the slideshow. You are amazing. Thank you thank you thank you!!! xoxo
Chris -Hi Morgan, Jenn’s Mom here.. You are obviously very talented. The expressions you caught in these pictures are absolutely priceless. Chris
Megan Merkl -I am in love with these photos! The Valluzzo’s could not have been captured in a more natural and beautiful way. We love that all of our best friends can gather together in one place and have so much fun! These pictures are gorgeous, just can’t get over it! Amazing work Morgan, and you had some pretty great models to work with! ;)
