Carrie // Shop Small

Several weeks ago, my friend Erin sent me a link to a blog, telling me that I should go check it out. Since she ALWAYS knows exactly what I love (and what I love to waste time doing on the internet), I wasn’t surprised when I immediately fell in love with Carrie Rollwagen’s Shop Small blog.

There are a lot of words thrown around these days… “going green,” “eating organic,” “supporting local business,” etc. But sometimes it’s hard to get past all the hype to find people who walk the walk and who have fresh opinions and perspectives on these kinds of practices. Carrie is one such person. She made a commitment at the beginning of the year to only shop and eat at local Birmingham establishments for all of 2011, and she’s chronicling her adventures on the Shop Small blog. What I loved about Carrie’s writing right off the bat was that she never comes off as being elitist or self-important (which is how many people who talk about this stuff sound to me, personally). She’s just a normal girl on a mission to uncover local gems and do her part to keep them alive and vibrant. I can totally appreciate this because I often find myself craving local flavor and a small-town feel, but I don’t always know where to look. It’s so helpful to have someone go out and do the research and point you to the best places. You’ll have to go check out her blog to really get a feel for why I think she’s so darn likable and why her opinions and thoughts matter.

So anyway, as soon as I read through all the entries on the blog, I immediately emailed Carrie and asked if she would let me contribute by taking her headshots or going out to shoot certain locations she was spotlighting or something along those lines. For awhile now I’ve been thinking about taking on a side project, but I wanted to make sure it was something I could really get behind and be motivated about. So when I stumbled across her blog, I just felt like it would be a great opportunity, and a fun way to stretch myself creatively and shake things up a bit.

Fast forward several weeks, when Carrie sends me an email Tuesday night saying that Birmingham Magazine is running a story about the blog in its April issue and wants a photo of her to go with it. Carrie told me that my enthusiasm about wanting to help made her think of me immediately, so she asked if I was available and willing to do a mini-shoot on the fly since everything was due on Monday. My response? YES PLEASE! I’m so honored she asked, because it turns out she’s pretty good friends with several awesome photographers in the area whom she could’ve easily asked to do it.

So yesterday we met up at Urban Standard to snap a few quick shots, then headed across the street to the most darling accessory boutique called Charm. (Seriously, if you haven’t been, check it out. Chatham, the owner, is so incredibly sweet, and ridiculously talented to boot.) It was such a fun shoot that by the end of it, I was itching to get home and edit and share the images. Soooo…. viola!

If you’re not already thinking it, it has to be said: this girl’s got the stunning beauty of Zooey Deschanel. I mean, LOOK at those gorgeous green eyes! Dang!

AND she drives a Vespa! Could she possibly be any more adorable?

Thank you so much again, Carrie, for asking me to do this. It was a pleasure! And big shout out to Chatham for letting us run wild in her store. :)

Joy and Seth // Happy Holga

This weekend my brother Seth and his girlfriend Joy drove down from Knoxville to visit us in Birmingham. It’s always exciting for us to play tour guides, so we showed them the side of Bham we’ve been discovering slowly but surely. This included tacos at Rojo, coffee and breakfast at Urban Standard, shopping at Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie (neither of which Knoxville has… yet…), and sushi at Sekisui. We also (re-)watched the episodes of Portlandia that have aired so far and played a few rousing games of Scattergories. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend, and it was nice to be unplugged from technology the whole time and just enjoy each other’s company and the gorgeous weather and the fact that none of us had to work.

While we were at Urban, I impulse-purchased a new Holga camera. Though my beloved Diana has served me well, it’s not quite as user-friendly. 120 film is much more difficult to load, and more than twice as expensive to purchase and get developed. So I bought the Holga because it’s a 35mm version, which is not only easier and less expensive, but also has the same ratio and format as the digital images I shoot, so it fits in really well. I wanted to take advantage of the fact that I had Seth and Joy to model for me and the gorgeous light we were having to shoot a few practice rolls, and I’m really pleased with the results. What I love about shooting with these lo-fi cameras is that there are so many unexpected surprises that come from them. It’s a low pressure shooting situation, and I’m not constantly checking my camera screen to see if I’m getting what I want. And I love the anticipation of actually dropping film off and having to wait for the results. So awesome. And while I would never shoot an entire session with a Holga (like I did here- but that’s only because there will be MANY more photo sessions with Seth and Joy to come), it’s a great tool to add to my arsenal. So behold the soft yummy dreaminess of good old-fashioned Holga fun:

They’re my little Urban Outfitters models. :)

And this, hands down, is my favorite. Aren’t they so cute?

Melanie Harris - They are as adorable as you and Jamie! - Love you all, Mom

Lorraine - totally gorgeous shoot. I just picked up UO’s fisheye lomo on sale a couple weeks ago, and I’m so excited to see the first round of pictures! It’s such a weird sensation to not have the instant gratification of downloading, or the luxury of taking 100 pictures and choosing the best one to keep, but that’s been part of the thrill! Thanks for the inspiration!

Megan Merkl - Amazing! I seriously love all of these pictures and you are so right about the Urban Outfitters models.

Kelly Cummings - how awesome! I’m jealous. need to shoot more film and probably buy the 35 mm holga as well. ugh.

Melissa M - i love the nostalgic feeling that film has over digital. digital is just so much easier.

Seth - These look amazing! So glad to be your little UO models. I LOVE YOU!

carly - No way! I impulse bought a new Holga too! Just a couple weeks ago! I haven’t even had the guts to try it yet but you’ve inspired me to go for it. Gotta say, that second to last double-exposure shot is the bee’s knees… Frame it. It’s a keeper.

Kimber - This is fabulosity! Love the cute UO couple! The kissing shot is in the words of Rachel Zoe: bananas. :-)

Joy - I can barely pick a favorite I love them all so much! Can’t wait to be your little models again, and again, and again.

kaitie bryant - love it! my brother just gave me some lomography hand me downs, and they have been OH so fun:) I’m waiting to develop the fisheye right now and love the anticipation. sometimes it is so good to get away from photoshop!

christina moodie - Great shots Morgan! I love them!

Jennifer - Oooohh! I love these Morgan! PS - They are super cute together!

Melissa and Greg // Engaged

A couple of weeks ago, I put out a “casting call” on my Facebook fan page for a cute, fun couple to model for me for a free session. I had no idea what kind of response I would get, especially since my Birmingham following is still in its baby stages, so I was surprised when literally 15 minutes later I had an email in my inbox from a girl named Ashley. Thing is, she wasn’t even volunteering herself… she was writing to nominate her sister Melissa, who had recently gotten engaged to Greg. She talked about what a great couple they are, how Melissa is a student at the Art Institute of Atlanta and paints portraits of people’s dogs at the dog park, and how Greg is studying to be an engineer, and how they are such giving, deserving people, and how Melissa fell in love with my work at the bridal show. Then, next thing I know, I have two MORE emails in my inbox… from more people singing Melissa and Greg’s praises! I mean, how could I say no to that?

So last Saturday we met up at Camp Coleman up in Trussville, which is a Girl Scouts camp where Melissa has worked during the summers. Talk about a fantastic location for an engagement shoot! Barns, cabins, horses, bridges, canoes, trees, fences… it was perfect. And Melissa and Greg were such troopers to endure the bitterly cold, dreary weather and my terrible jokes. :) They rocked it out, and I’m so excited to share these!

I have to kick things off with this absolutely adorable photo. Melissa has the cutest laugh!

How great is this horse barn? These two were totally adventurous and climbed right on up into the loft. Love it!

Gorgeous! Look at those green eyes!

Oh come on. You know you wanted a silly face.

Thank you guys so much for indulging me in a little Saturday afternoon fun! And a big thank you to Ashley, not only for your nomination, but also for coming along to help out! I had a blast with you guys. :)
