Stuff I Love | A GIVEAWAY!

If you’re a follower of this blog, you know how much I love telling y’all about the stuff I love. When I stumble on something amazing and life-changing, I can’t help but shout it from the rooftops! But today, I’ve decided to take it to the next level and GIVE AWAY some of my absolute favorite things. In my fantasy world, I like to think that with the end of Oprah’s show, she has passed the Favorite Things baton on to me, but of course that would mean I could give away vacations and cars and appliances and… well, that’s just not gonna happen. :) But I can do the next best thing, and that is to give away some of my summer essentials to one of my awesome readers. Keep in mind, this is open to everyone- not just clients or fellow photographers or friends- so please, please, please enter, or else I’ll just have to keep all these goodies to myself. ;) Read on to see what’s included and how you can win it!

First up, you can’t keep up with all your summer essentials without a great bag. Ladies, don’t get too excited… this isn’t a fancy brand name, but it is Target chic, and that’s just how I roll. :) I love this purse because it’s soft and flexible, but roomy and sturdy enough to pack in a lot of stuff (even your camera, for all you photographers!). I also love the versatile light gray color, which goes with pretty much everything and should transition into fall really well.

You’ll also get one of my newest favorite toys, a Holga 35mm camera (in turquoise, naturally). This is great for documenting all your summer adventures in an old-school, artistic way. (Check out this session that I shot entirely with my Holga to get a feel for the magic it makes.) Imagine the suspense of having to wait to get your film developed just like we used to have to do after family vacations… Yeah, it’s pretty sweet.

And what would summer be without a great soundtrack? Death Cab for Cutie is always a fantastic standby, and their latest album Codes and Keys is no exception. Also, I’m sure you’ve heard Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” blowing up radio stations… is her voice not incredible? Guaranteed to inspire some road trip singalongs.

You’ve also gotta have a good novel to read at the beach or by the pool or on your backyard deck. One of my favorites is The Help, which you may have seen is being made into a movie starring Emma Stone later this year, so perfect timing! I know it’s sometimes hard to take books that make the bestseller list (and subsequently get made into movies) seriously, but this one really is a fantastic read. You’ll also get Season One of Mad Men, which is one of, if not the, best shows on TV, in my opinion, so if you haven’t seen it, you’ve gotta start here and catch up. If you have, then you need to have it on DVD so you can re-watch it again, and again, and again.

I can’t make it through the day without a little help from Starbucks VIA (aka crack packets), so I’m also throwing in a handy reusable cup filled them. Makes great iced coffee anywhere you are, or you can mix it with milk for a latte or blend it with ice cream for a milkshake. So many uses!

This nail polish is my new favorite. A perfect shade for summer! I also love Loreal’s Infallible lip gloss, which is long-lasting and supposedly plumps your lips. I can’t really speak to that last claim, but I do love this stuff. And Burt’s Bees… well, that just speaks for itself. :)

The only thing that you can’t see very well in the photos is a $20 gift card to Chick-fil-a. If you don’t love Chick-fil-a, well…. I don’t know if we can be friends. Ha. I’m also throwing in my favorite summer candy… Starbursts and Sour Patch Kids!

And finally…. a candle! I only recently got into burning candles, and my absolute favorites are the Woodwick ones. When you burn them, they sound like a crackling fire, and for people like me who will probably never have a real wood-burning fireplace, this is a pretty sweet close second. When we were in Cracker Barrel the other day, I spotted some new styles, so naturally I had to pick up this summery Lemon Verbena scent, which is perfectly light and fresh.

So the question now is….. how do I win all this great stuff?

EASY PEASY!

Will and Helen and the House They Built

Since we’ve been living in Birmingham, we’ve been lucky to meet some really amazing people . Two people we’ve grown particularly close to are Will and Helen, a couple we met through our church‘s Sunday night small group. They currently live in Birmingham in an apartment during the week while Helen attends school and Will teaches, but they’ve been making the commute to their house in Hartselle (about an hour north of Birmingham) on the weekends to spend time at their house and on their land. The absolutely crazy part? Will built this house… with his own two hands, and almost no help. When he originally told us this, I had a hard time believing it. I mean, I can wrap my mind around people being book smart or artistically gifted, but man… someone not just designing and decorating their house, but actually building it, from scratch, just straight up manual labor? Whoa.

I was even more blown away when we actually drove up to Hartselle to see it for ourselves this past Sunday afternoon. As it turns out, Will and Helen really want to live full time in Birmingham, so they’ve decided to rent out their house to Will’s Aunt Sally, which works out well, because his parents live right down the road on their own amazing piece of land (with chickens and gardens and orchards and porches and the whole nine yards). That way, they’ll be able to keep the house, but it will allow them to live here in the city. So I told them we had to see it before they rented it, and I really wanted to commemorate their time together there in photographs. I mean, duh. If you’re friends with me, you can pretty much expect this kind of behavior. :)

As you’ll soon see, this house is gorgeous. I was so impressed with not only the craftsmanship, but with the design and all the finishing touches, which were also chosen by Will and Helen. When we first walked in and I saw that spiral staircase leading up to a loft…. with skylights… I nearly died. Talk about a dream come true. See for yourself:

The polished concrete countertops, the butcher block island, the cabinets, and yes, even the beer…. all made by hand. :)

Yeah, they’re really cute together….

Will insisted that we do an old-school self-timer photo of the whole group, so even though I look like a hot mess, we have documentation that they’re actually our friends. Ha.

Will and Helen, you guys are awesome. Thank you so much for allowing us to barge in, and bring along our troublemaker of a dog (who did, by the way, roll around in a dead skunk while we were there… nice). We had a blast, and are so impressed by your mad skills! Love you both.

To Jameson

Dear Jamie,

Today marks our third wedding anniversary, and it’s hard for me to believe how quickly the time has flown. I know you hate as much as I do (if not more) when people try to give the impression online that their lives and relationships are perfect, so don’t worry… I’ll try not to sound any PDA alarms with this letter. :)

The truth is, marriage is both everything and nothing like I thought it would be. We’ve had our fair share of knock-down, drag-out arguments, but then, I do that with everyone I love the most, so I guess you’re no exception. Chalk it up to my stubbornness and absolute inability to admit when I’m wrong. (I’m still working on it. Promise.) You hate it when I leave two inches of milk in the bottom of my glass and don’t rinse it out. I hate it when you put a box of cereal back in the cabinet that literally has one piece left in it. But marriage is full of compromises, and it’s the art of learning to live together, and truth be told, there’s no one else in the world I would rather live with. You’re kind of OCD, I’m kind of a control freak, but somehow, we just work.

Today also marks six years since our first date, although there was definitely some confusion about which date actually counted as a real date. Remember when we met at Kingston Alley for dinner, and you had just come from seeing a movie with your parents, and you were caught off guard because when Carrie told you that Morgan would be there, you were expecting your (male) high school friend? My memory isn’t the greatest, but I specifically recall certain little things, like how awful my earrings were, and how nervous I felt, and how you got into your blue Jeep with the Tennessee “T” on the back and I couldn’t help but think how it made no sense for me, still in my too-cool-for-school (or so I thought) indie rock phase, to be attracted to you, in your fratastic oversized cargo shorts and Abercrombie polo shirts. Nevertheless, I felt an instant connection, and next thing you know, we’re exchanging music and talking about marriage on date two? Three? And you bought me Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the day it came out because I just caught up in the series a few weeks before. You went to summer school, I worked at Starbucks and that other awful temp job, and we stayed up all night talking anyway. I can’t even remember what it’s like to be able to function on a few hours of sleep a night. And we listened to Coldplay’s X&Y on repeat. And we went to Six Flags and Warped Tour, and we drove out to the lake and sat on the dock and watched the craziest lightning storm I’ve ever seen. And then we had to say goodbye when I left in August to go back to Charleston to school, and I cried so hard and for so long I can’t even tell you, but then I came back at Christmas for good, and we haven’t been apart since.

Give me an experience over a material gift any day, because that’s how my memories are marked. This time five years ago we went to Boston with my family for summer vacation, and we celebrated our first anniversary by going to see Matt’s cousin’s Beatles cover band play, and you had him dedicate their first song, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” to me. This time four years ago, we had just gotten engaged and had gone to Hilton Head for vacation, and I began my obsessive wedding planning phase. This time three years ago, we graduated (after having the best semester of my entire college career, I might add), got married, and spent a week lounging by the pool at Atlantis. This time two years ago, we had just made the move out to Salt Lake City from Knoxville, and we didn’t know a soul, and we tried to celebrate our first wedding anniversary by going out to a nice restaurant, but it was a Sunday and we had not yet learned that literally EVERYTHING is closed on Sunday in Utah. But it was the beginning of a great adventure. This time one year ago, we got to spend time in San Francisco and then New York City, and it was so much fun to explore these cities with you and experience their food, their culture, their energy… together.

And now, here we are, in Birmingham, Alabama, six years from the time we met, and I love you more than ever. More often than not, we have blah, sit-at-home-and-veg-on-the-couch days. Nothing too exciting. But that’s what I love about being married to you. We can do absolutely nothing, and we’re doing something, because we’re together. I love having someone around who knows me inside and out, and who can tell immediately when something is wrong, no matter how hard I try to deny it or conceal it. Knowing someone fully means knowing the good and the bad, and the fact that you’re still here, loving me and supporting me and giving me pep talks on my bad days, having seen me at my worst, means everything to me. We may argue all the time, over my backseat driving and your weird food habits and what Redbox movie to get, but if that’s the worst we’ve had to deal with this far, I’d say we’re pretty darn lucky.

I, for one, can’t wait to see what year seven has in store.

Happy anniversary, Jamie. I love you.

Jan - Green Tree Photography - HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to both of you! May you always be blessed and have many more happy years together!

Jamie - I’m kind of a private person so I don’t really know what to say to this. But thank you. I wish I had a high traffic website where I could make a public declaration, but no such luck. I’m pretty lucky. I love you, Morgan.

Karla Collegeman - Oh! Happy anniversary Jamie and Morgan! This is beautiful and so true in so many ways :) Marriage is about learning to live with each other, with all the good, the bad and the ugly! Hope you guys have a wonderful day and many many years of joy :)

Courtney - Happy Anniversary to two of the most wonderful people I know! I’m lucky to know you both & I hope you have many more happy years to come.

Debbie - Happy Anniversary to you both! Thank you Morgan for loving my precious son so much. We love you as our own daughter and wish you both a lifetime of the love and fun you have shared so far.

Megan Merkl - The joys of marriage! What I love most about you two is that you are the real deal. I love you both from the bottom of my heart and am so thankful to have you in our lives 1400 miles away. Happy Anniversary to our dear friends!

Melanie - What a beautiful testimony of love. I remember distinctly the evening you and I met at Conner’s for dinner and the first thing out of your mouth was “Mom, I think he’s the one”……. I’m thinking “what??? you’ve only been out with him a couple of times”. You knew. I will never forget watching you chase Jamie’s car down the street for one last goodbye as we were loading up to head to Charleston. I do not think I have ever seen you cry that hard for that long. ever. I wondered if you would ever understand why Dad and I insisted that you go back to the College of Charleston for at least one semester because we did not want you to make a life decision based on a relationship so new. We needed confirmation from Jamie that you were his chosen one. You had been gone for about two days when I received a phone call from Jamie asking if he could come over and “hang out” with us. From that point on he spent many evenings at our kitchen table eating scrambled eggs and biscuits & gravy asking for one more story about you. He wanted to know every detail. Confirmed. Happy Anniversary!! Dad and I love you both so much.
Mom

Kimber - Happy Anniversary, you guys! I remember the proposal. So perfect. John and I felt so cool that night! :-)

Amanda - Oh Morgan! Darn these Cox genes! I believe I liked it better when I was younger and tougher and did not cry at the drop of a hat! I am sitting in the car needing to go into work but I first must try to compose myself and wipe mascara off my raccoon looking eyes!! I love you and Jamie so much! I remember meeting Jamie and thinking I really, REALLY like this guy. I have grown to love him because of the love he demonstrates with you (and he is just a cool guy)! God created the perfect match for you! I know your Mom and Dad prayed for him long before they even met him……someone to love you unconditionally! I remember how giddy (the only word I know to describe the huge smile on your face whenever you talked about him or he was around) and love-struck you were with Jamie early on and I see that same love and adoration now! I love you both and wish you many, many, many years of happiness! Happy Anniversary!

Aunt Heather - Morgan…..After reading your post and your previous “comments” before mine I’m sitting here like I just got finished watching “The Notebook” again!! So, having said that I will only say “Happy Anniversary” to the two of you and I wish you many, many, many more years to come!! Love ya bunches!!!!

Amanda - SO SWEET!

Ellen - I love this post, Morgan! You are such a gifted writer AND photographer. Amazing! Our pictures you took are hung on the wall all over our living room and every time I look at them I smile. Happy (late) Anniversary to you! Your wedding was truly amazing… one I will never forget!
